T.M. Zakir Machmud Ph.D.

Zakir1Zakir Machmud is currently Head of SME Center (UKMC) and Senior Research Associate at the Institute for Economic and Social Research Faculty of Economy University of Indonesia (LPEM) FEBUI. Prior to his current position, he served as a Managing Director of the LPEM FEBUI from 2011 – 2013 and served as an Advisor to J-PAL (Jameel Poverty Action Lab) Southeast Asia office a year later. Since 2015 he was appointed as a special staff to the Minister of Industry. Apart of his professional experiences, he is a senior lecturer, for both undergraduate and post graduate program at the FEBUI. With around 20 years of research experiences, his expertise cover area of industrial organization, small medium enterprises, competition policy, applied microeconomics, industrial policy and trade policy.

He earned his bachelor in economics from University of Indonesia in 1996 and then awarded master degree in economics from University of Adelaide, Australia in 2002 and a PhD in economics from University of South Australia, Adelaide, Australia in 2006. He went to Brown University USA as a visiting fellow at the Population Studies and Training Center (PSTC) in 2008 while doing his research on Effectiveness of Aid on Disaster Recovery in Aceh. During 2009 – 2011 he contributed several writings on Indonesian SME as he was a member of SME policy working Group in Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA). He was also selected to participate for an Executive Education on Social Programs in J-PAL Global at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA in 2014. His involvement in public area were established when he was selected as a member of the Indonesian delegates on SME comparative study to Germany in 2009, represented Indonesia in the G20 think tank summit in China in 2012, and member of Indonesian delegates to attend and present at the POSCO Global EVI Forum in 2016.
